Advising Updates

Spring 2020 Advising Begins This Week!

Monday, February 3rd
Academic advising and registration period begins and alternate pins are ready for deletion (not sure what this means? register for our advising & registration refresher above!). All undergraduate students should be advised and cleared to register by Friday, February 21st.

Academic Advising and Pin Deletion

ALL First- year students should meet with their FSEM mentor to review their schedule and to have their alternate PIN deleted.

All Undeclared second-year students should meet with a staff academic advisor in the Academic Advising Office for advising and pin deletion. (303-871-2455; advising@du.edu)

All declared majors meet with their departmental advisor for advising and pin deletion.

Business students or those intending to apply for Secondary Admissions to Daniels should attend a group advising sessions and/or meet with a Daniels Undergrad Programs Academic Advisor (303-871-6910, DCBundergrad@du.edu).

Sunday, February 16th:
Last day to drop (W Assigned) without instructor’s signature via PioneerWeb

Monday, March 2:
Last day to drop courses with instructor approval

Monday, November 4:
Last day to drop courses with an instructor’s signature on an add/drop form

IF students have extenuating circumstances that prevented them from dropping a course by Monday, March 2nd  then they can submit an academic exception petition to request a late drop.  Students should speak with an academic advisor prior to submitting their petition.  Students can go online to schedule an appointment or call the front desk staff in the Academic Advising Office to schedule an academic advising meeting, 303-871-2455 Driscoll South, suite 30 (below the bookstore).


2020-21 FSEM Request for Proposals: due March 1st

Academic Programs is now accepting proposals for First-Year Seminars for the 2020-21 academic year. All information about program eligibility, responsibilities, and proposal submission can be found in the official Request for Proposals (RFP) below. Proposals are due March 1, 2020.

Please note that returning FSEM faculty are also required to fill out the proposal Qualtrics (link to be found at the end of the RFP).

Join Us: First Annual DU Zombie Crawl


Date: Wednesday, November 6
Time: 4:30 – 6:00 pm (Costume contest with prizes at 4:45 pm)
Location: Carnegie Green (in front of AAC)

Students in Jennifer Campbell’s FSEM “Using Our Brains: An Interdisciplinary Study of Zombies in Popular Culture” are holding a DU Zombie Crawl and will be filming horde and chase scenes to be used in student films. Please share this information with your students. Faculty, staff, partners, and children are welcome to join, too–the more the scarier!

In partnership with the central Academic Advising office, we will be offering an FSEM advising and registration refresher workshop on Wednesday, October 9th from 3:00 – 4:30pm (Driscoll South, suite 30 – check in at front desk). This workshop is aimed at providing practical tips and information to ensure faculty feel prepared for the Winter 2020 advising and registration period. Register here.

Winter interterm courses are great for students who are looking to take advantage of the winter break between fall and winter quarters. Choose from a variety of course types (travel, on campus and online courses) and course schedules (some are as short as 1 week!).

We are pleased to announce our Call for Submissions for the fourth annual celebration and showcase of first-year writers’ responses to DU’s One Book, One DU shared prompt.

We welcome One Prompt responses in all genres—including multimodal texts (e.g., songs, videos, graphic arts/comics) and spoken performances—by first-year students. If your work is accepted, it will be displayed at the showcase event on Wednesday, October 30th from 6pm–7:30pm. For more information and submission guidelines, visit the One Book website.

General Updates

We want your feedback: Training & Discoveries Week
In the effort to improve future FSEM training and the Discoveries Week structure, we are offering faculty $100 to fill out this feedback survey by Monday, September 16th.


How to un-hide your syllabus in Canvas
In order to place the One Prompt assignments in your course, we “hid” your course syllabi from students until they were ready. If you need assistance moving your syllabus back to the visible navigation bar for students, follow these instructions.


Navigating Pioneer Travel & Expense
In the transition to using Pioneer Travel and Expense for reimbursements, we expect that you may need additional assistance in working through this process. We recommend utilizing the expertise in Shared Services if you have questions in completing expense reports for reimbursement.

As Leah mentioned at the FSEM training, students filled out a Student Intake Survey in which they were asked to indicate the following information for their first year on campus:

  • Community living goals
  • Health & wellness goals
  • Academic goals
  • Top 3 things they are excited about
  • Top 3 things they are nervous about

Upcoming Events

Secure your Helen Thorpe tickets now!
If you have not already, please fill out this Qualtrics to reserve your FSEM’s tickets for An Evening with Helen Thorpe by 10AM on Friday, September 13.

The event will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 7:30PM in Gates Concert Hall.

NOTE: Please only reserve tickets for students who will attend, as there are only 500 tickets reserved for ALL FSEMs.

Writing Program Fall Showcase: Sept. 19th
The Writing Program would like to invite FSEM faculty and students to the Fall Showcase Event on Thursday, September 19th from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Anderson Events Room.

Students will showcase, using posters, their writing projects from the academic year of 2018-2019.

This event will aim to inspire first-year student writers and give them an opportunity to gain insight into their future Writing Program courses and projects, as well as writing opportunities here at DU, such as Many Voices One DU, WRIT Large, and future Minor courses.
